Good Wheat Yield

Even in this difficult season there has been an odd high crop yield. A yield, probably in excess of 90 bushels to the acre, has been obtained from four acres and a half of Hilgendorf wheat on a dairy farm at Camside, Rangiora. The farmer, Mr R. G. Amer, is not positive of the area involved, but on the basis of the crop being four acres and a half in area the yield would be about 97 bushels to the acre The wheat, at about 1001 b to the acre, was sown about the middle of July on some of the heaviest land in the Rangiora area. The area was ploughed to a depth of about 10 inches in preparation for the crop. No superphosphate was used with it. On another seven acres and a half on the property Hilgejidorf sown a week earlier with lewt of super yielded about 85 bushels to the acre. On the Rakahuri property of Mr J. D. Gallagher at Okuku a crop of 17 acres of Mapua oats has yielded about 101 bushels to the acre, and in this area where there has been a more favourable rainfall in the past season than further down country some other oat crops have also given similar yields. The oats on Rakahuri followed crops of Arawa wheat yielding 72 bushels and 90 bushels to the acre, and in the most recent season lewt of nitrolime was placed on the wheat stubble in September about two weeks before the oats were drilled and this gave the grain crop an early boost. The crop, however, suf-

fered from rust and the grain weighed about 37 or 381 b to the bushel. Grass was broadcast after the oats had been sown and this struck very well.
