Variety is certainly the spice of television (life, and a fair example |of the range of entertainment TV can offer is .provided by CHTV’s pro- ! grammes for today.
It is reasonable to suggest ■that in them there Is something for nearly everyone, and the day is probably I typical of most. A survey of the fare to be screened indicates a familiar leaning to(wards the lighter side of life, and not too mAny would find ; fault with that. The survey also hints at the reliance the N.Z.B.C. places on its purchases from ! American companies. After I“Eugenie Grandet”—the final part of the de Balzac novel—- • there is an American comedy. 'Then there is an American folk artist. Followed by an ■ America western.
i After 4 p.m. the children’s programmes: and back, at 5.36 pan., to an American comedy. After the news, some American surfing. The 8.8. C. makes an entrance with “Hereward the Wake,” but then it is back to America and Julia. After a spot of sport and a nibble at the news, into crime with Department S, and then an American again, Ella Fitzgerald and the variety special. Only at the end of the evening are the British able to assert themselves. Nothing
could be much more British: than Jack Hawkins, who stars' in the film “The Long Arm” and the evening winds up with distinctly un-American activity—the Rugby football international between South Africa and Scotland. All ip all, not too bad a day. Three comedies, two musical features, two historical novels, one crime programme, a bit of gunplay and a quick dip in the surf. And no advertisements.— PANDORA.
