ACTION ON BAY PROPOSAL URGED

“The people in this district want to see some action,” the president of the Sumner Residents’ Association (Mr B. R. Hansen) said last evening, commenting on the slow rate of progress on improvements to McCormack’s Bay.

“McCormack’s Bay could be , come the showpiece and envy of New Zealand if the local bodies, the suburban sports bodies, and clubs could gel together.” he said in a state ment outlining proposals foi improving the area. “With the rapid growth of housing McCormack’s Bay is an ideal setting for educa tional. sporting and cultural purposes. This area could be the focal point for Sumner. Redcliffs. Mount Pleasant. Lyttelton. Heathcote. Woolston. Linwood. Opawa. and even further afield.” said Mr Hansen. A building similar to Cowles Stadium. squash courts, tennis courts, bowling and croquet greens, playing

fields, a boating area for younger children, salt watei baths, a playing area and a picnic area were possible amenities. “By centralising . facilities the present fragmentation would end. No doubt many people are proud of their local clubs but falling membership and lack of funds must present big problems." he said. “I would ask people to consider these proposals objectively and not to reject them out of hand. With a concerted effort the future needs of a quickly growing area of Christchurch could be met. and the Christchurch City Council should give the lead in this direction.”
