Amnesty For Owners Of 1953-57 Vauxhalls
The police investigating the death of Miss Jennifer Beard at the Haast River bridge said yesterday that no owner of a Vauxhall car made between 1953 and 1957 who brought his car in for the notice to check would he prosecuted for offending against the traffic regulations.
Detective Inspector E. T.| Mitten, the officer in charge; of the investigation, said last evening that the police knew of persons who had not brought their cars in for’ checking because there might have been difficulties about; warrants of fitness or changes of ownership. “This amnesty applies only) to those persons who bring their cars in for us to check." he said. “If we have to go and find the car then the story may be different." Five more detectives from' Wellington and Dunedin, most of whom have already worked in the investigation on the West Coast, have joined the' headquarters staff tn Christ-i church.
Inspector Mitten said that ■ more than 20 detectives were i checking the tens of thousands of pieces of information the public had given the ■ police. They were working : exceedingly long hours in : their efforts to complete the : assessment of the information as soon as possible. The police, he said, still ’ wanted information, particu-; ’ larly about the green Vaux-I i hall car in which Miss Beard I ! was last seen alive and the; man, aged about 45, who was! i with her t “We will go anywhere to; I get information,” he said.; > “Some person may have inf or-; • mation which he thinks is of j - no consequence, but it may! be vital to the inquiry.” ;
