Jumbo Jet Failure Over Atlantic
(.V Z P A -Reuter—Copyright I LONDON, February Iff' A Boeing 747 jumbo jet airliner landed on three engines at London Airport yesterday after turning back over the Atlantic on a flight to New York.
The Pan American Airways; airliner jettisoned 10,000 gallons of fuel before landing safely with 145 passengers aboard. A spokesman for the airline said that the pilot was forced to turn back when the oil pressure in one engine dropped, causing it to overheat The faulty unit was switched off and the airliner returned to make a threeengined landing. The passengers, who included a party of British journalists bound for the world heavy-weight boxing title fight next Monday between Joe Frazier and Jimmy Ellis, were transferred to a Boeing 707 bound for New York, The Boeing 747, a 362passenger aircraft, went into transatlantic service on January 22. Its maiden flight was delayed for seven hours, and was made by a second aircraft when the one intended for the journey developed an overheated engine at Kennedy arport, New York. One of the pre-inaugural 747 flights to London was also I delayed by an overheated engine: and a test flight on! Decmber 13 ended with a broken landing gear caused! when a cross-wind hit the plane as it landed, causing the right wing to dip. Adjustments had to be made in the aircraft’s emerg-
ency exit chutes before the Federal Aviation Administration was satisfied that the jet was ready for commercial service.
