WOMEN’S BOWLS
Champion Beaten
(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND. The title-holder, Mrs E Wilkie (Walton), was eliminated by half an inch when she was beaten, 20-19, by Mrs M. Baty (Whakatane) in post-section play at the Dominion women's pairs bowling championships yesterday.
With the score levelled at 19-19 on the twenty-first head, an extra end was played, and in endeavouring to draw the shot with her final bowl, the champion failed by a half-inch measure.
Mrs C. Smith (Manurewa), who is the singles finalist with Mrs Wilkie, was also defeated, 18-22, by Mrs J. Rvan (Onehunga). Mrs S. Winstanley (Marewa), the pairs winner on four previous occasions, had two close calls, scraping home, 19-18. against Mrs K. Broderick (Beerescourt) and 16-15 with Mrs T. Nixon (Herne Bay).
Of the eight pairs who qualified for yesterday’s play with the maximum six wins on Tuesday, only three managed to survive. They were Mesdames T. Bainbridge (Rocky Nook), J. Southey (Auckland) and M. Coveny (Lower Hutt). The others—Mesdames N. Rankin (Okahu Bay). F. Smith (Hastings). A. Whittam (Mount Wellington East). K. George (Wellington), and E. Tew (Hauraki)—were beaten.
