Pollution Problem
(N Z P.4.-Reuter— -Copyright) ARICHAT (Nova Scotia). February 11.
The oil leak from the shattered tanker Arrow slowed down today, but the large black slick continues to threaten the coast and wildlife at Chedbucto Bay. The Liberian-registered. 11,379-ton tanker ran on to a rock last Wednesday, and heavy weather broke her back.
Her stern section, still con-] taining about one-third of her] : 3.800-000-gallon cargo of l bunker oil, can be pulled from the rock and towed to safety when weather conditions became favourable.
Her forward section, how; ever, containing between 1,000,000 and 1,500.000 gallons of oil, cannot be moved. Experts say that the oil will have to be either burned or released, in controlled leaks so that it will drift out to; sea.
A second test using glass beads to aid the burning of the bunker oil was carried out in the bay yesterday. Mopping up the pollution already in the bay is expected to continue for some months.
