HITCH-HIKING DEPLORED
Suggestion By W.D.F.F.
The whole business of hitch-hiking was quite dangerous, as had been recently demonstrated by several incidents in both the North Island and the South Island, Mrs P. Davison, of the Hurunui branch, said at the interprovincial conference of the Women’s Division of Federated Farmers in Christchurch yesterday. She was speaking to a remit put forward by Mrs H. Grigg that the division suggest to the Government that [ a policy of educating the [public be introduced to dis- ! courage hitch-hiking. I Mrs Grigg said th? students | had already been h»Mned from ; hitch-hiking ir Palmerston ; North by the ulrroduction of a by-law. She jaid she had also spoken cb officers at youth hostels who said they would be relieved to see hitch-hiking stopped. One way of discouraging hitch-hiking would be through insurance companies, which could make personal accident insurance policies invalid when parties hitch-hiked.
Suggestions were also put forward at the conference that the remit be reworded to ask the Government to ban hitchhiking. Although this was supported by many members, the conference agreed to leave the original wording for the present and to reconsider the : situation if necessary.
