ARNHEM LAND
Army Plan Reported (N.Z Press Assn—Copyright) LONDON, February 4. The British Army wants to take over a vast area of Australia as a training and supply base for a joint British and Commonwealth “east of Suez” force, the “Daily Mail” says today. A scheme to use a 90,000 square-mile area irySArnhem Land will be put to the British and Australian governments, it says. Arnhem Land would be an ideal site for putting modern armour through its paces and for training troops in realistic battle situations, the “Daily Mail” says. However, Arnhem Land is a huge Aboriginal reserve and detailed studies are now being made of ways in which their hunting grounds could be avoided.
