RUSSELL'S FUNERAL

(NZ. PA.-Reuter—Copyright) PENRHYNDEUDRAETH (Wales), February 4. A simple, unceremonial funeral with just a handful of mourners is planned for Bertrand Russell—the philosopher who died on Monday at the age of 97. A member of Lord Russell’s household staff said the body will be cremated on Thursday, “The funeral will be totally private and attended by as few people as possible," he said. “There will be no ceremony as Lord Russel] was not religious.” Among the hundreds of telegrams received by Lady Russell was one from the Queen which said: “I am sorry to learn of the death of Lord Russell whose distinguished contribution to twentieth century thought is recognised throughout the world My husband joins me in sending you our sincere sympathy.” The Duke of Bedford, a cousin of Lord Russell, said: “He was the most distinguished member of the Russell family living and I was very proud to be his cousin.”
