FORECAST TO MIDNIGHT
Situation.—An anticyclone over the northern Tasman Sea extends on to the North Island; a very deep depression is centred to the south of the Tasman Sea, and its associated cold front is moving toward the south of the South Island. Forecast: Canterbury.—Fresh north-east winds at first about the coast; a period of fresh northwest winds especially inland with warm conditions; a cool south-west change this afternoon in coastal areas south of Banks Peninsula; mostly dry but some showers about the Alps. Marlborough and Nelson.—Northerly or westerly winds prevailing, becoming strong locally near Cook Strait and fresh in some other exposed places; mainly fine and becoming mild but some showers developing in the western ranges of Nelson and a few showers spreading to the east this evening. Buller and Westland.—Moderate variable winds; cloudy at times with scattered rain developing; moderate temperatures. Outlook: scattered showers in Buller and Westland; mainly fair elsewhere.
