Oil Search Doubt

(N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) TOKYO, Feb. 3. The Japanese Oil Exploration Company has taken no decision yet on its project to search for oil off Australia’s Great Barrier Reef. A spokesman for the company today described as inaccurate rumours circulating in Australia that Japex would cancel the search. Japex executives in Tokyo believe that they should await the decision of their representatives on the spot. The spokesman added that the attitudes of the Australian Federal and Queensland Governments, which were expected to begin a comprehensive inquiry, would have to be watched carefully. Japex (Australia) and the Mitsui Industrial Group of Japan are understood to be engaged in discussions with Ampol, the national petroleum company, on its recommendation to suspend drilling off Mackay. It was out of the question to seek an alternative site for the oil search at this stage, the Japex spokesman added.
