WIDE RANGE OF SHARES EASY

The New Zealand sharemarket fell back sharply yesterday when a wide range of issues, including most of the speculatives, closed lower to put falls ahead of rises by two to one.

Trading was active again, but turnovers in mining and oil shares were lower. Southern Cross Minerals rose 3c on news of its call and cash issue, and New Zealand Petroleum firmed sc, but Consolidated Silver slumped 11c to 77c (the rights 5c to 58c) and Waihi lost 8c to close at 75c. Beach, Bounty and L and M Oil all fell, the last by 10c to 235 c. A handful of leading issues stood out against the downward trend, but more lost ground, including a 13c loss of Forest ex Hutt shares. Wellington Publishing was the strong stock of the day,

gaining 20c to 250 c. Most movements were moderate, but the falls included an 18c loss to 120 c for Associated Group Securities.
