The final placing in the Christchurch Bowling Centre’s three inter-club competitions were:

Three fours: Opawa I (44} points) 1; Linwood (43) 2; Spreydon I (42J) 3. Manning Cup: Cashmere (180) 1; Spreydon (168.75) 2; Mount Pleasant (137.50) 3. Robinson Shield: Imperial (84) 1; Papanui (78) and Barrington (78) eo.ual 2. Beckenham Club Seventeen players remain in the club’s singles championship, the two lifers being N. Brostow, A. Spicer, J. Cable, R. McNabb and F. Barnard. Spicer, a second-year colt, surprised by taking a life from R. Lamb, but Spicer deserved his success, his steadier drawing being the deciding factor. McNabb finished strongly to snatch victory from J. Lyell in a match which produced some fine drawing. Another closely-fought match was the clash between Cable and B. Chapman. The scores were even starting the last end and a replay was necessary of the twentyfirst end when a winning shot could not be determined. On the replay it was Cable who added to his total. In the pairs championship, 21 teams are still in, the twolifers being R. Crowton, Lyell and Barnard.

The colts championship has been reduced to seven competitors, Spicer and W. Brook being the two-lifers. On current form Spicer looks to have a good chance of taking the colts title.

H. B. Kay, with assistance from other senior players, has been conducting a training school at the club this season for beginners. It has proved popular not only with newcomers to the game but also more-experienced bowlers wishing to improve their mat positioning and delivery technique. Canterbury Club T. J. Steele will play W. Watson and D. B. O’Neill will meet H. C. Fletcher in the semi-finals of the club’s fours championship. One of the most interesting recent games was the clash between Watson and T. Kearney. Beginning the last end the scores were tied, 19-19, and with one bowl to play Kearney was holding the shot. Watson, however, had a bowl on the tilt and just as Kearney played his last delivery the tilted bowl fell, giving Watson the shot and the game. Bateman plays Fletcher in the semi-final of the championship pairs. Fletcher is already in the final on the other side of the draw and whichever way the result goes in the semi-final, the final will be between the four in Fletcher’s club rink. Fletcher is also through to the semi-finals in the singles. He will play the winner of the match between Steele and Cook. On the other side of the draw the semi-final will be between G. H. Humphries and the victor in the quarterfinal between S. Thompson and W. Blackie.

In the intermediate singles, A. Murray plays the winner of the match between D. Clements and L. M. Johnson. On the other side of the draw Murray plays A. Dowling and F. Brebner meets Ashworth. The colts final will be between Stowell and F. Pickering.

The jubilee fours played last Sunday was won by K. Hore, G. Stevens, C. McGregor, F. Lees (s). The runnersup were A. Johnson, J. Thomas, A. Lattaway, F. Kearney (s). Dallington Club

In the final of the club’s pairs championship, last year’s winners, I. McAllister and D. Stuart, will play C. Ford and D. Martin. In the semi-finals Martin beat J. Garven 22-13 after a keen struggle and in a high-scor-ing game Stuart beat F. Hughes 28-25. The fours championship has reached the semi-finals with J. Garven still a two-lifer. He iwill play Stuart on one side

of the draw and H. Taylor in the other match. In a quarter-final, Stuart, last year's rinks champion, beat Martin 18-17.

The singles championship is at the quarter-finals stage where G. Rowland plays J. Donaldson, L. McKendry plays H. Lack, T. Joyce plays Martin and I, McAllister, last year’s singles champion, meets R. Mitchell. The club’s annual match against Redcliffs for the Goodman Cup was played recently, Redcliffs winning by two matches to one. Edgeware Club The final of the club’s championship fours was won by C. Lester, E. Kean, J. A. Hayward and A. T. G. Johnstone (s). In a close and interesting game they beat E. J. Robinson, P. D. Packman, A. Clibborn and J. Cowan (s) 22-20.

The scores were even after 12 ends, and also after 17 ends and 19 ends. On the second to last end Johnstone gained the vital break when with his last bowl he took out Cowan’s shot bowl and gained three shots. On the final end Cowan could manage only a single. C. Quickenden and W. Winterbourn qualified for the club’s pairs final by taking a life from L. H. Boot and D. E. Wood. The other finalists will be the winner of the match between Wood and A. J. Charteris. Still left in the championship singles are Winterbourn, with two lives, A. Hay, Charteris, Hayward, Wood and Johnstone. The final of the colts championship will be between D. M. B. Gowans and V. E. Mabey. In the semifinals Gowans beat M. J. O’Connor and Mabey beat Robinson. Elmwood Club

In the semi-finals of the championship pairs J. C. McDonald beat P. Barnes and K. Bartlett beat C. Smith. McDonald, who has with him W. T. Newburgh, won the title last year but Bartlett has been playing particularly well and an exciting final seems assured. Seven teams are left in the fours. They are the rinks skipped by R. Mitchell, P. Barnes, R. Green, G. P. Thomas, E. M. McCahon, J. C. McDonald and C. Morris.

The colts championship has brought forward some promising new talent. The final will be between J. Boyle and K. Readman.
