SURVEY OF PARKING
Cashel St And High St Parking in Cashel Street and High Street will be surveyed today and on Friday by a group of businessmen in Conjunction with the Canterbury - Westland Retailers’ Association. The purpose is to provide information for submissions to the Christchurch City Council on parking requirements when sections of the two streets are closed to form a pedestrial shopping mall. The spokesman for the businessmen’s group, Mr B. G. M. Brinson, said yesterday that the formation of the mall would displace 56 metered spaces, and although the City Council was negotiating for the purchase of property for a new parking building in Cashel Street, east of the proposed mall, it might be at least two or three years before the building became a reality. “What we want to find out from the survey is a pattern of usage of the present meters the reasons for motorists’ visits to the city, length of stay, and location of premises visited,” said Mr Brinson. “Motorists parking in the area between 10 a.m. and noon, and 2 p.m. and 4 p.m. on the two days will receive a questionnaire form. We hope the. public will respond by answering the questions a’nd returning the form promptly. The information obtained will be of considerable value, both to the businessmen and the planning authorities.”
