AGREEMENT WITH U.S.
Education Foundation (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Feb. 3. An agreement establishing the New Zealand-United States Educational Foundation was signed in Wellington today by the Prime Minister (Mr Holyoake) and the United States Ambassador (Mr K. Franzheim). Mr Holyoake said the foundation would carry on the function of the Fulbright programme.
Under the Fulbright programme, which was financed by United States post-war credits, research work was carried out in a number of fields vital to the development of New Zealand, the Prime Minister said. Fulbright travel grants allowed New Zealand scholars to study in the United States. “I think it is appropriate that we should place these exchanges on a proper bilateral footing," Mr Holyoake said.
“The Government will be joining with the United States Government in providing financial support for the new foundation, which will operate a scheme similar i in scope to the Fulbright proi gramme.”
