Christchurch Nurse Wins $600 Award
The $6OOO international nursing fellowship won by a Christchurch-born and trained nurse, Miss Berenice King, is the first of its kind to be awarded, and New Zealand is the first country to which the award has come. There were 27 overseas applicants for the fellowship.
The fellowship is administered by the International Council of Nurses, to which the New Zealand Registered Nurses’ Association is affiliated. The award can be used for formal study in any chosen field, and Miss King intends to undertake a two-year planned programme in research methodology and nursing research at Ohio State University. She may study for a Ph.D. Miss King was educated at
Christchurch Girls’ High School In December, 1950, she graduated as a registered nurse from the Christchurch School of Nursing. Miss King is also a registered maternity nurse, a registered midwife, and holds the Diploma of Nursing, a certificate in psychiatric nursing, and a Plunket certificate. She gained a B.A. degree in sociology and education from the University of Canterbury, and also a master’s degree in education. She is now a nurse adviser (nursing education) in the nursing division of the Department of Health, Wellington.
