HAWKE CUP CHALLENGER
(N.Z. Press Association) INVERCARGILL. Three members of the Otago Plunket Shield-winning team are included in the Southland XI to challenge Waikato for the Hawke Cup in Hamilton tomorrow, Friday and Saturday. They are the Alabaster brothers and L. D. Hollands. A fourth member of the Otago team, the Invercargill Marist opening batsman, K. J. O’Connor, is not available because of a knee injury.
The Technical, Canterbury and New Zealand centrehalf, G. Griffiths (left), was formally presented with the New Zealand “Soccer Player of the Year” award for 1969 at the Technical College Memorial Hall last evening. The presentation was made by the president of the
Canterbury Football Association (Mr T. C. Gottermeyer) on behalf of the national association, during a social function held by the Technical club. Griffiths, who made his debut for New Zealand last season and was an outstanding member of the World Cup team in Israel, was
awarded the trophy in November. He is the fifth winner since the trophy was presented to the N.ZT.A. by Mr R. Blair, formerly of Greymouth, in 1964. The previous holders were M. G. Burgess (1965), P. L. Whiting (1966), C. Lath mour (1967) and D. Wallace (1968).
