Plotters Gaoled
(N.Z. Press Assn.— Copyright) GAZA, February 3 Three Israeli Arabs who pleaded guilty to having plotted to assassinate the Israeli Minister of Defence (General Moshe Dayan), have been sentenced to prison terms ranging from five years to 20 months. The three admitted planning to kill General Dayan by planting a car loaded with explosives near a restaurant in Tel Aviv which the Minister was believed to frequent. Three other men accused of being involved in the plot have pleaded not guilty, and the Israeli Military Court will try them on February 8.
The court sentenced Salah Muhamed Lehiyeh, aged 24, to five years in prison; Yussuf Ibrahim Issa, also 24, to four years; and Yihiye Ben Yussuf Issa, aged 31, to 20 months. Defence counsel had asked the court to take into consideration that the three were from Kafr Kassem, where 43 men, women and children were shot dead by Israeli border police when they contravened a curfew at the beginning of the 1956 Suez campaign. The responsible officers and men were later tried and punished.
