Fill Stays Grounded

(N.Z.P -A.-Reuter—Copyright) new YORK, Jan. 30.

America’s grounded Fill fighter aircraft will not resume flying for at least another four months. None has been airborne since December 22, when a fault was discovered in a port wing pivot. Dr George Mueller, General Dynamics’ vice-president of programme and development told a press conference in New York today that new inspection procedures still to be approved by the Government would keep the planes grounded until mid-1970. Some of the grounded aircraft are with United States forces in Vietnam. An Australian Government order for 24 FIUCs due for delivery in March, may be delayed because of the proposed inspection procedures. The Fill project has been plagued by spiralling costs and accidents since it began in 1964, and there have been Congressional demands that it be scrapped.
