Rams Of Most Breeds Cheaper On Second Day Of Fair

More than half the rams offered at the Canterbury stud ram fair yesterday did not change hands at auction. Rams sold under the hammer ranged from as low as 18 per cent of the offering of English Leicesters to almost 44 per cent of the Border Leicesters.

The Border Leicesters were the only breed offered to show an improvement in values on last year’s fair. They were up better than 46 per cent, but English Leicesters were back 36 per cent, Corriedales 26 per cent, and Romneys nearly 10 per cent.

The tpp price of the day was $lOOO for a Romney ram from Tapanui, in Otago, which was purchased for Omakau, in the same province. The heavy procession of passings was unquestionably a feature of the day’s selling, but auctioneers regularly reported sales having been made privately afterwards. Woo! Trend The Corriedale sale lost something of the glamour it has had in the last year of two. The average level of prices fell $BB a head or 26 per cent to just on $250 a head, which was about the level recorded two years ago. And whereas last year 54 per cent of the offering was sold in the ring, yesterday the proportion of sales at auction dropped to only 38 per cent. The easier trend of fine wool prices this season could have been a factor in the apparently weaker market In the first run of the sale 17 rams out of 40 offered sold for an average of $254 to 1255, while in the second run seven sales only were made out of the offering of 23 rams for an average Of $239. The best of the Corriedales made from s3*o to $5OO, average to good $2OO to $3OO, and others down to $lOO. Vendors almost Invariably had lower averages than last year. E. W. Taylor, of Ashburton, who topped the section last year at $9OO shared top price yesterday with P. N. Martin, also of Ashburton, at $5OO. For four making from $2OO to $5OO Taylor averaged $377.50. Last year for only two his average was $725. Martin, for two ranging from $220 to $5OO. averaged $360. F. C Bldgen of Greendale, averaged $312.50 for two making from $225 to $4OO, compared with $425 last year for six. A. H. Kennington, Ltd. Seddon, had two sales between $l2O and s3*o at an average of $240, and the D. S. Johns Trust of Culverden, averaged $235 for two selling from $llO to $360, whereas last year for two they averaged $4OO. One consignment of Corriedales at least was bought for the North Island. Top Price The Romney sale, which came at the end of the day, opened with a burst when the Campbell Downs Stud Company,' of Tapanui, realised $lOOO for the first ram offered. This went to B. J. and C. White, Omakau. This was equal to last year's top price. But the sale did not come up to this promise and only 38 per cent of the offering of 73 rams found buyers under the hammer and the 28 sold at an average of s2*l were $32, or nearly 10 per cent below last year's sale. Trading sagged in the final run of the sale when only nine sales were made in the course of the offering of 31 rams for an average of $174. The pick of the selection made from $6OO to $lOOO, with average to good at $4OO to $6OO, and others at $lOO to $3OO. I. R. Oakley (Mayfield) earned the second highest price with a sale of $6OO. One of the best averages in the section was recorded by D. H. Robertson and Sons, of Gore, with three rams selling at $4OO

to $450 and averaging $417. Last year for six they averaged $342. The Merrryvale Trust of Gore, with three making from $175 to $5OO averaged $358, compared with $342 for three a year ago. J. D. and W. T. Robertson and Company (Gore), had two sales at $2OO and $350 for an average of $275. R. W. Oakley, of Ashburton, also with two sales between $2OO and $275 averaged $237.50, and C. R. Humphries, of Charlton, Gore, who last year averaged $5OO for three sold four yesterday from $125 to $3OO and averaged $231.

The sale began with 19 Border Leicester rams being sold out of 38 brought into the ring in the first section of the sale of this breed. In the second run, sales dwindled to 10 out of 29 entering the ring. For the 29 sold out of the 67 offered the average price was between $207 and $2OB and this was $6B, or slightly more than 46 per cent, up on th* fair of a year ago. Sal* to North J. G. Gunn, of Darfield, again headed the section with a sale at $7OO to the Claremont Stud, of Wanganui. About eight sales at auction were made to North Island districts, including Masterton. Wanganui and Gisborne. The Westmere Farming Company, Ltd, of Ashburton, also had a sale at $450 to H. M. King, of Ashburton. The best of the Borders made from about $4OO to $7OO. average to good about $2OO to $320, and others down to about $lOO. The Westmere Company headed the averages with three rams selling from $250 to $450 and averaging $325. J. G. Gunn was close behind with five rams ranging from $l4O to $7OO and averaging $313. For five bringing from 3100 to $320, N. W. Scott, of Coldstream, averaged $226 and H. W. Farquhar, of Culverden. with three sales between $l5O and $3OO. averaged $225. The gallery, which was moderately well filled tor the start of the Border Leicester sale, thinned markedly as the English Leicester section started. A mere five of the 28 English Leicesters offered had any luck In the selling ring. They represented only 18 per cent of the entry. These rams made from $76 to $l2O and averaged $96, which was $54 down on last year's fair or 36 per cent. Among the few vendors to make sales were the Beechwood Trust (Culverden), who made a sale to H. G. Hartnell of the same district.at $l2O, and R. J. Low and Son, of Highbank, also made a sale to the Rakaia Gorge for $llO. Stud Ewe Sal* An entry of 28 one-shear Romney ewes offered on account of Raymond Oakley, of Ashburton, met a good sale. Only two lots were passed in at auction. For tbe 23 sold in the ring, prices ranged from $l3 to 352.50 for an average of $lB. Most of the ewes were taken by a Hamilton buyer.
