CONVICTS KILLED

Gun Battle In Badlands <N.Z. Press Assn.—Copyright) XICOTEPEC (Mexico), Jan. 29. Twenty escaped convicts and four law enforcement officials were killed yesterday during a five-hour gun battle in the badlands 310 miles south-east of Mexico City, the Mexican Defence Department has announced. Another 20 convicts vanished into the Badlands. A department spokesman said that the prisoners escaped from a State penitentiary about three months ago, and hid in the mountains. Marauding from their hideout base, they were believed to have been responsible for the murders of two village mayors and 24 other people. A column of about 100 soldiers, reinforced by dozens of State police, had been scouring the area for weeks before yesterday’s clash, in which three soldiers and one policeman were killed, and four soldiers and two policemen wounded.

Eight convicts were captured alive.
