SPECULATORS LEAD MIXED AUSTRALIAN SHAREMARKET

Mining shares closed on a mixed note in Sydney yesterday after profit-taking trimmed early leads by many issues. The market was firmer in Melbourne, where some mining and oil issues made strong advances.

Tasminex ended the day 500 c higher at 4000 c in Melbourne and at 3900 c in Sydney after sales as high as 4100 c. Eastmet Minerals, another Mount Venn prospector, finally rose 80c to 540 c but eased 10c at the close in Sydney. The big moves of the day in Melbourne came from Southland, Gippsland and Mid-East Minerals. Southland led the way with a 110 c rise to 930 c, while Gippsland continued to move ahead, putting on 140 c, and Mid East emerged from the doldrums with a 47c leap to 140 c. Endurance was another good performer, gaining 22c to 90c, and Sunhill did well to firm 20c to 140 c.

The announcement of a 40 per cent lift in profits by Hamersley had little effect on the shares, which closed only 10c better in Sydney at 1600 c. C.RA. rose 70c to 2220 c, but Western Mining fell 400 c to 1550 c, while Great Boulder lost 10c to 540 c. Mount Isa was steady at 1450. In the Sydney oils, Beach bounded ahead on news that drilling would soon begin on the new well off the coast of New Zealand. The shares closed 30c higher at 420 c after profit-taking chipped an earlier 60c gain. Bounty also responded with a small rise to 18c. Among the industrials, both B.H.P. and C.S.R. eased.
