Taumutu Water Supply To Be Improved

A request from residents of Fishermen’s Point Taumutu, for improvements to the water supply at the settlement, held over from the December meeting for a report by the riding members, came up for consideration at this week’s meeting of the Elesmere County Council. After hearing reports from Crs A. Nimmo and W. F. Reese and the engineer (Mr P. Macfarlane) the council agreed to supply 800 feet of pipe to carry water from an artesian, on condition . that the interested residents bear the cost of the necessary work or do the work themselves. It was pointed out that the council’s liability was limited by the fact that the residents were not ratepayers. Water For Stock On the subject of water supply for farm stock the engineer reported that the Rakaia River had been in flood several times during December, requiring restoration work during the holiday

period. Rainfall in the foothills had restored flows in the Hororata River and Grigg’s Creek resulting in improvement to the Haldon race intake. Dangerous Corner Reporting on tests made at Stubbs’s-corner on the Lees-ton-Rakaia road, the county traffic officer (Mr B. L. Crook) said that several accidents had occurred through motorists taking the bend too fast A comfortable speed would be 30 miles an hour. It was agreed to ask the Canterbury Automobile Association to erect advisory 30 mile curve signs at approaches to the bend. In a further report the traffic officer said that 36 applicants had passed the practical driving test and nine had failed: and in the theory test 31 had passed and 20 had failed. There had been no reported accidents in the county for the holiday period up to December 31. There had been three fatal accidents during 1969.
