MAUI OIL BENEFITS

Labour Party Cautious (N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Jan. 29. The advantages which New Zealand would obtain from the full development of the Maui oilfield might be very limited unless the Government ensured maximum New Zealand control ov?r production surplus to the country’s requirements, the member of Parliament for Mount Albert (Mr W. W. Freer) said today. In a statement this morning, Mr Freer said: “The Labour Party fervently hopes that the Maui field proves as promising as Ministerial statements would lead us to believe, but cautions against any fanciful dream that great gains are likely in the immediate future.

“Australian experience shows that at least four years delay is likely, without Government procrastination, such as occurred with the use of Kapuni natural gas.”
