Crater Lake Survey Will Use Helicopter
(New Zealand Press Association) ROTORUA, January 13. A major study of Mount Ruapehu's crater lake, involving the use of an R.N.Z.A.F. helicopter, will probably be made later this month.
The bathymetric survey, the first for five years, will yield information on the lake floor and the depth of the lake. All branches of the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research -.Till be represented in the team, which is expected to complete the study in only one or two days. The team of eight will assemble at Waiouru military camp, and will be flown to the lake by an Air Force Iroquois helicopter. The men will carry out their work from r boat lowered to the lake by the helicopter. They will use an echo-sounder to establish depths and movements in the lake floor. Mr G. Grindley, chief project geologist for the D.S.I.R. in Wellington, who is co-
ordlnator of the project, said the attempt would probably be made this month, but no decision had been made. The temperature of the lake rose with the eruption in June and has remained relatively high.
