Clashes In Vietnam
(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) SAIGON, Jan. 12. American and South Vietnamese forces today reported killing more than 60 North Vietnamese and Viet Cong in scattered clashes in South Vietnam. A United States Marine Corps reconnaissance patrol landed by helicopter in the mist-shrouded A Shau Valley, about four miles from the Laotian border, yesterday, and killed five North Vietnamese soldiers.
The patrol spotted about 15 Northern troops on the jungle-covered western wall of the 22-mile-long valley, and called in helicopter gunships for support. There were no American casualties. 852 bombers raided the northern end of the valley last night, striking at base camps, bunker complexes and weapons positions about two miles from the Laotian border. Two members of another
reconnaisance patrol were killed in a clash in the province of Quang Tri, northwest of A Shau Vallby, and four North Vietnamese died. American forces reported killing 17 guerrillas in other clashes in the northern part of the country.
