Traffic Lights
Sir,—Having noted that more lights are to bo installed in Bealey Avenue, I make an urgent plea for lights at the intersection of Fltzgeraid Avenue, Kilmore Strett, and Avonside Drive. To cross the avenue to the bus stop is just about an impossibility with cars and trucks driving I should say, 50 miles an hour, especially those who come over the bridge going south. Going north to town left at Hampton Corner, they just go round it at top speed, making it dangerous for pedestrians who wish to cross. Surely pedestrians, especially elderly people, have some say when they wish to cross a street Accidents do occur regularly at this Intersection and near misses occur frequently—Yours, etc., NEARBY RESIDENT. January 6, 1969. [The city engineer (Mr P. G. Scoular) replies: "Followihg the completion of the bridge over the Avon River at Kilmore Street it was expected that there would be an increase in traffic through the intersection of Fitzgerald Avenue with Kilmore Street. The city council is aware of the growing need for signals at this intersection and an application has been made to the National Roads Board for signals to be installed in the near future. Fitzgerald Avenue is a State highway and therefore any scheme must meet with the approval of the Ministry of Works.’’]
