Prices Of Chocolate And Cocoa
The increase in chocolate prices announced recently is queried by a reader, “G.E.R.” who asks if the Minister of Industries and Commerce (Mr Shelton) will instruct his department to investigate the price Increases.
Cadbury-Fry-Hudson, Ltd, announcing the price increase, said that this was the first increase in the price of the firm’s 25c block since 1954. “Compared with the 25c block In 1954, the 1970 weight of the new 30c blocks will be heavier and ' the . effective Increase in price will have been 15 per cent in 16 years.” The statement also said the world price of cocoa beans had increased from $2OO a
ton in 1965 to ‘the current price of over $800.” The price of cocoa in world wholesale markets is lower today than In 1954, but higher than in 1965. The following selection of prices is taken from “The Times,” London (sterling prices converted to New Zealand currency at ruling exchange rates):—
On January 9 this year according to “The Times,” the price for short-dated futures was £316 (SNZ676) a ton.
