Family Help At Leigh Hotel

(Neto Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND, January 11. Family and friends are helping- to keep the beer flowing at the Leigh Hotel as the owner, Mr Lloyd Mayes, recovers from last Thursday night’s violent assault on him.

“People have been really wonderful, it is amazing,” said his son, Mr Ron Mayes, aged 23, a student at Auckland University. Mr Ron Mayes cut short a holiday at Opotiki on Friday after bearing of the attack on his father. Mr Mayes’s second son, Jim, a bricklayer, who was also on holiday, has joined in to help with the hotel. Mr Mayes sen. is still resting from the attack and his sons described him as “very shaken.”

His wife ,was also resting It will be another week at least before Mr Mayes returns to the hotel.

During the assault he was stabbed In the neck, bashed, and robbed of $7OO. Doctors told him his stab wound could have been fatal If he had received it any lower down his neck. Auckland detectives investigating the assault on Saturday discounted a report that a knife and a bloodstained dinghy found on Leigh Beach had any connection with the assault

Detective A. R. Moore, of Takapuna, is leading the investigations. ' Detective* went to Whsngarei late on Friday to interview three men, but later returned to Auckland.

The men they Interviewed were Borstal escapees. Three men appeared in the

Whangarei Magistrate’s Court on Saturday charged with escaping, but not with any offence associated with the Leigh Hotel robbery.
