Fleming Third
While most of the spectators at Shirley yesterday afternoon were watching the fours semi-finals, W. R. Fleming (Onehunga) and R. Adams (Ruawai) met on the back green to decide third and fourth positions in the singles championship in the national bowls. The match was keenly fought until the final ends where Fleming pulled away to win 20-16 and gain some compensation for hls defeat in the pairs final in the morning. Fleming led IM after 12 ends. After 15 he was ahead 16-9. Adams scored threes on the sixteenth and seventeenth ends to give himself a chance of taking home the third place-getter’s trophy.
However, Fleming drew three shots on the twentieth end and with his chances of gaining the four he needed to tie the scores on the final end slim, Adams conceded the match.
