Chch Girl In Lagos

The war with Biafra has had little effect so far on life in Lagos, Nigeria, apart from frequent road blocks, according to a former Christchurch girl who has been working there for almost a year.

“The only news we hear about it really is what we read in English or American newspapers,” Miss Robyn Dean told her parents, Mr and Mrs F. B. Dean, of 4 Grimseys Road, Papanui. Miss Dean is one of only 20 expatriate single girls living in Lagos. She is a hairdresser at the Federal Palace Hotel, managing the salon on the hotel premises.

Life in Nigeria is false, according to Miss Dean, who has paid a brief visit home since she took the job in Lagos. The cost of living is high. A pint of milk costs 6 shillings sterling and a can of peaches 13 shillings. Miss Dean, who used to work in a Christchurch hairdressing salon, left New Zealand about four years ago. She has worked in Britain and toured Europe extensively. Her father came originally from Liverpool but moved to New Zealand at the age of four, in 1904.
