EXPO 70 ORDERS

(N.Z. Press Association) AUCKLAND, Jan. 9. New Zealand printers are criticising the decision to award the contract to print pamphlets for the New Zealand exhibit at Expo 70 to a Japanese firm. Mr R. L. Proctor, secretary of the Auckland Master Printers’ Association said: “This is a prestige job and should have been given to New Zealanders.” He said that although tenders had been invited from New Zealand firms, quotes were not called until October 7, too late for ordering the required paper from overseas.

In a letter to the Federation of Master Printers, the Minister of Overseas Trade (Mr Marshall), said that the contract had gone to Japan because if the pamphlets were printed in New Zealand there could be a problem if more were needed, or if they were in oversupply. The Japanese firm would provide free storage and would print more pamphlets as required. Mr Marshall said that as most visitors to the New Zealand exhibit would be Japanese, the basic requirement was for pamphlets in Japanese., It was thought that a Japanese firm could best provide these.
