Drowning Toll 14

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Jan. 12. There had been '4 deaths from drowning already this year, one more than at the same time last year, said the Water Safety Council. Parents were not taking the responsibility they should for their children, a spokesman for the council said when issuing the holiday drowning statistics in Wellington today. Over the official holiday period, from December 23 to January 5, there were nine deaths from drown-

ing, compared with eight last year. In December 15 persona drowned, seven of them children under 15. The majority died in rivers and streams. "We can publicise and educate the public to the dangers, but it is up to parents to supervise their children when they are on or near the water,” the spokesman said. Last year there were 89 drownings from what were considered avoidable recreational causes, and 31 from boating accidents.
