France Beats Scotland

(N.Z.P.A.-Reuter) EDINBURGH. The French Rugby team, which failed to win a match in the international championships last season, got off to a flying start in this year’s competition with an 11-9 victory over Scotland at Murrayfield on Saturday.

For France, B. Dauga and J. Lux scored two fine tries in an exciting match. L. Paries converted one try and also dropped a goal. For Scotland, I. Smith scored a try and W. Launder kicked two penalty goals. The French success was based on a durable, efficient pack. Quick breaking from the scrums enabled the Frenchmen to offset Scotland’s superiority in the set pieces. Paries, at half-back, playing in only his second international, caused Scotland constant anxiety with his unpredictable attacks. Though beaten, Scotland contributed to a spectacular game, switching ideas with audacious invention. The most impressive feature was the forwards* good linking with the backs. Slight hesitancy at half-back and two defensive lapses cost the home team the match.
