INFORMAL CONTACT
Chinese, U.S. Diplomats (N.Z.P.A.-Reuter—Copyright) WASHINGTON, Dec. 5. The State Department disclosed yesterday that United States and Chinese officials had their first personal contact yesterday for almost two years, but declined to say whether the meeting foreshadowed a resumption of formal talks.
A department spokesman said that Mr Walter Stoessel, the United States Ambassador to Poland, had a few words with Chinese officials at a social gathering in Warsaw, where formal talks were held by the two sides until Peking broke them off in January, 1968. Officials refused to discuss the significance of the contact, but ■ observers felt that there was some meaning to it, as it came after recent reports of some softening in Peking’s attitude towards the United States. The Nixon Administration has frequently made clear that it would like to resume formal talks with China, either in Warsaw or elsewhere.
