Teacher Assessment
Sir, —On Wednesday a contributor, Mr L. D. Galbraith, expressed surprise that articles by Mr V. F. Wilkinson and himself had elicited no response in the correspondence columns of “The Press.” If he continues to submit articles he will get over this surprise and realise
that, unlike, say, the elections or racial equality, education is not a nice, safe topic but one fraught with danger to the participants and will remain so until our beset Education Department decides to promote teacher-critics and to laud parents who make justifiable complaints. Also, as education is not an exact science, Mr Galbraith should give little heed to progress cards. Because the department does not lay down set standards of work and because the performance of pupils varies greatly over the years, the marks that we hastily jot down on progress cards are at best a very rough estimate. —Yours, etc., J. F. WILLIAMS. December 5, 1969.
