$3271 Collected About $3271 was collected in the annual Christmas street appeal held by the Hotary clubs of Christchurch yesterday. The money will be used to help the handicapped and* needy. With two of the nine clubs which took part in the appeal .still to hand in their totals, this amount is already $306 more than that raised last year. The total includes $594 collected at a stall in Cathedral Square run by the wives of Rotary club members. The secretary of the Christchurch Rotary Club (Miss C. E. Wood) said last evening that all the clubs wished to thank the public for their generous support Concern About Fires The North Canterbury Catchment Board is concerned about the number of accidental fires in country areas. It believes that steam trains cause some of them. The board was told yesterday that five fires had occurred on the Arthur’s Pass line in the wake of a recent excurion train. The board will ask the Federated Mountain Clubs, the Deerstalkers* Association, the Jet Boat Association and similar organisations to be especially careful about fires in the open.
Two Houses Sold A two-bedroom weatherboard house on a section of 20 perches at 123 Southampton Street, Sydenham, was sold for $2900 at an auction yesterday conducted by Smith’s City Market, Ltd. The Government valuation is $2600. A five-room house on a section of 26.7 perches at 47 Tedder Avenue, Bexley, was sold for $3lOO at an auction conducted by Dalgety and New Zealand Loan, Ltd. The auctioneer was Mr R. Park.
