A golfing gain
TVOMEN’S golf in Canterbury, already on a firm footing, has been further strengthened by the transfer to Christchurch of the New Zealand representative, Miss W. Bryant The blonde, 25-year-old international has come south from Te Awamutu, and has joined the Avondale club. This gives Avondale a tremendously strong women’s side, for its ranks also contain Miss C. Sullivan, the New Zealand representative, Miss M. Doherty, a Canterbury representative who has returned from Australia, and Miss S. Bissett, a South Island junior representative. Miss Bryant, who is blessed with a smooth swing and a delicate touch on and around tile greens, has been prominent at national level for the last few years. The New Zealand championship has so far eluded her, but she won the Plate event in 1967 and, at the same tournament, set a women’s course record for Shirley with a splendid score of 72. She made her first tournament appearance since her
arrival in Christchurch at the Agfa 100 on the Methven course last Sunday. With rounds of 80 and 77, she tied with Miss S. Boag for third place, behind Miss Sullivan and Mrs N. D. Cullen, the former Southland and Northland No. 1, who was another notable gain for women’s golf in the province this year.
