RACING Mayo Gold Picked For Te Aroha

"The TrW’ Special Service AUCKLAND. The $4OOO Thames Valley Stakes will take on special importance at Te Aroha today as a trial for some of the big events at Ellerslie during the Christmas holidays. The fine field includes Auckland Cup prospects as well as some of the best sprinter-milers in training.

The Thames Valley Stakes was introduced to the Te Aroha summer programme in 1960 when Lawful was successful. The winners meanwhile have all been good gallopers.

Mayo Gold is one of today's candidates which looks right up to the claas of the best winners. Sunvalley Mist is a top fiveyearold in great form, and Heflu, Bardall, Lord Cheval, Brazil, and Honour Me are other line gallopers in the field. Mayo Gold, now four, and one of the best since the middle of her first season, looks fast approaching top form again. She was highly impressive in her final fast work at Takanini on Thursday. The weightforege scale allows her 8-9, which is 61b less than she carried into third over a fast six furlongs at Pukekbhe last Saturday and the mile course is her best distance.

Unlucky Runner It is perhaps disquieting to the followers of Mayo Gold that R. J. Skelton, who could have had the mount, chose Sunvalley Mist Skelton expresses the highest regard for Sunvalley Mist and thought him more than a little unlucky not to win the Foxbridge Plate. Bardall, however, won the weight-for-age race at Te Rapa by leading all the way so little could be taken away from him- He is a free galloper which should have no difficulty in going a mile just as well.

Opinion at Te Rapa, where she is trained by W. C. Winder, is that Honour Me will go close, and Kalgoorlie, with a brilliant trial at Te Awamutu on Thursday, guaranteed himself a big following.

The distance is likely to be a little short for Heflu and the other stayers, Spring Filou and Highland Rebel. Brazil, a fifle four-year-old mare from Martian, is a laststart mile winner at Trentham and worth much consideration. Lord Cheval does not always show his best, but. on his day he is capable of anything. He and Gene, another of today's field, were the principals in the Adams Mile at Ellerslie last summer when Gene won in Australian and New Zealand record time. The race record for the Thames Valley Stakes is Imin 36 2-ssec by Sobig in 1964. It is one that might well be bettered this time if the favourable conditions continue. In the T.A.B. concession double Johnny Cash and Kastrup might be the best combination. Johnny Cash is already among the foremost Auckland Cup prospects. His hardest opponents today will very likely be Thundercloud and Four Demons. The weather yesterday was fine and sunny, and the track is in first-class order.
