SOCCER First Leg To Israel
(N .Zip. A. -Reuter— Copyright) TEL AVIV. Israel’s star forward, G. Spiegel, will long remember his performance in his team’s 1-0 victory oyer Australia in the first leg of their group 15 World Cup qualifying match yesterday. It was Spiegel’s well-placed free-kick in the nineteenth minute which gave Israel the lead, but the 23-year-old university student then earned the disapproval of the 50,000 crowd'when he shot a penalty straight In the seventy-fifth minute at Australia’s goal-keeper, R. Corry, and missed an open goal in the closing minutes. Australia defended almost throughout the match and the Israeli ’keeper, I. Vissoker, had only one shot to deal with, a speculative effort by the full-back, S. Ackerly. Israel now needs only to draw the return match in Sydney on December 14 to qualify for the finals in Mexico next year. If Australia wins, however, there will be a play-off on neutral territory.
