BURSAR SOUGHT
“Headmasters and senior staff members have become increasingly Involved in administrative duties, largely mechanical and always time consuming,” the. headmaster of Mairehau High School (Mr A. B. Ryan) said to the school’s board of governors when proposing the appointment of a bursar. The - board decided to approve in principle the appointment Mr Ryan recommended that the bursar be employed four hours each day the school was open at an annual salary of $1250 but no firm decision was made by the board on the hours or salary. 7 The secretary (Mr P. J. Halligan) said that two other schools had recently decided to appoint bursars. Mr Ryan said that school hours had been altered. After a request from the school council that the school day begin at 8.10 a.m. (30 minutes earlier than usual) and finish at 2.45 p.m. during the summer, the opinions of parents, pupils and the staff were sought Only 15 pupils had voted against the change, the percentage of staff support was not quite so high, but only 30 objections were raised by parents, most of them concerning possible traffic hazards, said Mr Ryan. “The new hours are being tried as an experiment which seems to be working well. But I .seem to come to school much earlier and go home at I the Same time.”
