Another Sculptor In Competition

John Panting, a Palmerston North - born sculptor at present working in London, has been added to the sculptors invited to take part in the competition to design a sculpture for Wellington’s civic square. Mr Panting studied at the School of Fine Arts, and the Royal College of Art, London. Mr Panting returned to New Zealand earlier this year for a short stay as visiting lecutrer at the Elam School of Art, Auckland. He was in the original list of sculptors but was taken out of it after it was found that he had gone back to London, said the Wellington City Council public relation* officer (Mr J. G. Thomson). mit his miniature, together with plans and specifications f rom London. Last month the other sculptor* who will take part in the competition, being run by the Wellington City Council, were announced. They are Tanya Ashken, Para Matchett, Lehn Narbey, Guy Ngan, Terry Powell, Tom Taylor, and W. R. Allen. They have to. present their designs to a special committee of judges before November 17. The Wellington City Council proposes to spend $6OOO on the sculpture.
