Wheat Merger Welcomed

The recent merger between United Wheatgrowers (N.Z.), Ltd, and Federated Farmers brought a great degree of satisfaction to growers, said Mr A. L. Mulholland, the chairman of the agriculture section of North Canterbury Federated Farmers, at a meeting of the section’s executive committee yesterday. It was pleasing to know that two years of negotiations had ended in success, Mr Mulholland said, but it was now up to the growers to “help the new organisation to tick, and tick efficiently.” The South Island, he said, should have a surplus of between 15,000 and 20,000 tons of milling-quality wheat this year. Whether it should be exported or held back was a matter of contention. Under the agreement signed with the Government the farmers were responsible for its storage and handling.

“So it would appear better that the Wheat Board clears the deck of the harvest- and begins with a new slate,” said Mr Mulholland.
