Earlier Target

(N.Z. Press Association) WELLINGTON, Oct. 15. As a result of special recruiting efforts by the Police Association, the Government hopes to achieve its target of a police to population ratio of 1:890 substantially earlier than the target date of August, 1970, the Minister of Police (Mr Allen) said in Parliament today. Earlier this year the ratio had been set at 1:920, but within weeks it was realised that with the help of the Police Association this would be achieved very quickly, the Minister said during the debate on members’ questions and Ministerial replies. He had obtained approval for the new target and issued a challenge to the association again to assist with recruitment. Already the police were well on the way to achieving the new target, he said.
