Maori Leader’s Remarks (N Z. Press Xssoc(ation) AUCKLAND, Oct. 14. The Tautoko Maori Committee has condemned a statement by the chairman of the Maori Council (Sir Turi Carroll) that it might take black South Africans 200 years to equal the position of Maoris in this country. The committee, which covers the Papatoetoe, Ota huhu and Mount Wellington areas, held a special meeting Jast night and carried a resolution dissociating itself ■ from Sir Turi Carroll’s stateI ment.
j The chairman, Mr F. R. said today that the committee felt a sense of shame as Maoris that such remarks had been uttered by a Maori leader of such eminence.
“That the remark was made in his capacity as leader of the Maori Council, to which we are affiliated, makes it more imperative that we should speak out strongly,” ’Mr Wilcox said.
