COMPLAINT TO SCHOOL

Refusal Of Admission The Hornby Residents’ Association has complained to the Rlccarton High School board of governors that Homby children were refused admission to the school when the complaint was disdiscussed at a meeting of the board last evening. The headmaster (Mr T. R. Hitchings) said that when the roll was closed after the first application, all pupils who had applied were admitted to the school. In the second application there were about 30 children too many for the school. Some Hornby children may have been refused admission then. Mr Hitchings said that when enrolment notices were sent out he had received no complaints. A number of the school’s textbooks were in a dilapidated condition, Mr Hitchings said. Referring to a survey being made by the Education Department into high school textbook needs, the secretary (Mr P. J. Halligan) said he thought the school could expect substantial relief. A grant of $llB.BO has been approved by the Education Department towards new chairs for the school library. The board has written to the department requesting approval for the extension of the technical drawing block and for the construction of a new art room.

Mr Hitchings was asked by the board to investigate the cost of a suitable communications system for the school.. 1
