Supplementary Estimates Tabled

Supplementary Estim a t e s of Government expenditure totalling $13223,000 for the 1969-70 financial year were tabled in Parliament today by the Minister of Finance (Mr Muldoon) bring the final estimate for the year to $1,651,531,000.

The vote for the development of primary and secondary industries is increased by §5,740,000 $4,391,000 of which goes to agriculture. Provision to meet the additional cost of the revised fertiliser transport subsidy scheme is assessed at sl.sm and a new item—subsidy on weedicides and pesticides—is shown at $2.5m. The social services vote is raised by $1,685,000, mainly to provide for increased grants to school committees and secondary schools, increased numbers of students and higher boarding rates.

An amount of $750,000 is listed as additional provision required to meet increased demand for assistance under a recent amendment to the Family Benefits (Home Ownership) Act. The main estimate for forest development during 1969-70 of $21,448,000 is raised a further s2m mainly for expanded logging operations. Post Office working expenses are increased by $670,000 and provision of costs asociated with the transfer of traffic control and vehicle inspection from a local authority by $350,000. Parchase Of Land Purchase of land for resettlement is lifted by $200,000 to a final figure of

$500,000 by the supplementary estimates. New items include $415,000 for payment of subsidies in respect of urban public passenger services, and $117,000 for investigations into 'a regional rapid transport system.

Other items include: Increased amounts for the brucellosis testing in cattle scheme. An additional $300,000 for the transfer of defence personnel from Malaysia to Singapore. An amount of $210,000 for the purchase of an apartment for New Zealand’s permanent representative to the United Nations, in New York. A grant of $lOO,OOO as assistance to industry for research. A boost of $12,000 in the air and shipping subsidy for the Chatham Islands; an amount of $23,000 was originally provided in the estimates. An amount of $20,000 to meet the cost of enrolling 20-year-olds for this year’s General Election.

Additional provision of $75,000 is made to meet expenditure on fares for immigrants ($597,000 was provided in the main estimates). In the police vote, a fur-

ther $68,000 is estimated for the replacement of patrol cars, and $67,000 for extension of existing radio services and the introduction of a new type of police radio communication. Public Works Under the public works and services vote, charges concerned with water and sewerage subsidies are assessed at $540,000. The supplementary estimates also provide the following grants under the vote for scientific and industrial research: Dairy Research Institute, $44,000; wool research organisation, $100,000; University Grants Committee (for minerals research), $20,000. An additional amount of $900,000 is provided under the heading of milk in the economic stabilisation vote. A sum of $13,050,000 was contained in the main estimates.

The additional provision is required for end-of-season payment to producers and miscellaneous minor adjustmenta. New Item Under tourist and publicity, overseas information and publicity expenditure is increased by $16,000, and tourist promotion and research including overseas activities by $65,000. This is in line with the cost of two approved annual programmes which are assessed at $lOO,OOO and $540,000 respectively. A new item in the tote for internal affairs is for Government computer services. $24,000. Marriage guidance service expenses are increased by $lO,OOO. An amount of $36,000 was provided in the main estimates.
