More Teams In Women’s Tennis

The Christchurch senior men’s tennis competition this season will have the same seven teams as in 1968-69 but the senior women’s grade, which at one stage had been abolished, will have six teams, compared with five last season.

The competitions committee of the Canterbury Lawn Tennis Association met last evening to organise its grades for the season from entries which closed on Monday.

The senior men’s grade was to have been restricted to six teams but seven entries were received and the committee decided to admit all. They are Elmwood, Edgeware, North Linwood, Woolston, United, Beckenham and Linwood Avenue. The grade will begin on November 1. After the controversy over the senior women’s grade entries were called and it was to be restricted to six teams. Those entered were Beckenham, Edgeware, Elmwood and Shirley, which were in last season, and Avonside and United, which are new entries. North Linwood, in the grade last season, did not enter. 12 In Senior Reserve Senior reserve was to have been restricted to 10 teams but 12 entered and again the committee agreed to accept all because refusal would have meant dropping two teams to second men's grade, which is now a Sunday competition, and the entries may then have been lost. . _

The senior reserve teams are North Linwood (2). Beckenham, Linwood Avenue, St Albans, South Brighton, Edgeware. Elmwood, Cashmere, Blccarton Domain, Shirley, and United Last season this grade had 10 teams, of which Opawa and Fendalton have not re-entered. South Brighton, Edgeware. Elmwood and Cashmere are the new entries. Little support has been given to the second men’s grade after its change to Sunday play through pressure on courts. Only four teams—Fendalton, Shirley, Spreydon, and South Brighton—have entered, compared with 14 last season when the grade was played on Saturdays but when the second section had many defaults. Reduced To Eight Nine entries were received for the first mixed A grade but these were reduced to eight— Avonside, Barrington, Cashmere, Edgeware, Elmwood. Fendalton, Shirley, and Spreydon. Becken-

ham. the other entry, was placed in first mixed B. which will also have Avonside. Burwood Park, Fendalton, Linwood Avenue. North Linwood, St Martins, United, Waimairi, and Woolston.

There were 10 entries, plus Beckenham, for 10 places in first mixeds and first mixed B so the Elmwood club will be asked if its team will be willing co play in second mixed, also a Sunday grade. This competition would then have six teams, the others being Fendalton, Barrington, Burwood Park. Blccarton Domain, and Woolston. The president’s grade, played on club courts has eight entries, one more than last season—St Albans, Barrington. South Christchurch, Edgeware (the new team), Opawa (2), and Spreydon (2).
