Newspaper Thefts
Newspapers throughout New Zealand are concerned about thefts from their honesty sale boxes. There have always been thefts from boxes and they are difficult to detect, but successful prosecutions have been brought in Southland recently and substantial fines imposed. A private investigator engaged by a newspaper company gave evidence before the Invercargill Magistrate’s Court of having rigged a microphone system in the coin box. This told him whether persons placed money in the box when they took a paper. As an additional precaution, he removed money after each sale so that he knew what was placed in the box as payment.
Of the three men caught stealing papers from the honesty boxes, two were fined $3O each and the third was fined $2O.
